I am a doctor and reside at No.38

Queen's Road Central. On the 12th June last I took the Star Ferry Launch which left the Kowloon side at 20.00 hours to go to Hongkong. I was on the upper deck. When about mid-way across the harbour a commotion on the lower deck and somebody shouted in Chinese that a person had fallen ar jumped overboard. I saw Mr. Silva go and look over the side and after a few moments he took off his coat and shoes and jumped overboard. I could see something floating on the water a good way astern; Mr. Silva swam towards

the object. I saw him get the object and swim some distance with it to a fe-buoy which had been thrown overboard.

He put the object, which I could then make out to be a human body, on the life-buoy. By this time the ferry launch had slowed down and returned to where Mr. Silva and his burden were, and I, with others got him and what A found to be a Chinese female on board. The woman was conscious but I applied artificial respiration which made her vomit a large quantity of sea water which she had swallowed during her immersion. I consider that it was a very brave act for Mr. Silva to jump overboard at night time and with a very strong current running.
